AT&T’s Trade-In Deal Offers $100 Off New Smartphones

We all see phones like the Samsung Galaxy S4, BlackBerry Z10, HTC One and iPhone 5 and want to upgrade to them. Of course these awesome new phones aren’t always so cheap, and while $200 is the expected price to pay, it still is a lot of money. Earlier this month AT&T began trying to make it a bit easier to get that new phone you want, offering a limited time promotion of either $100 off new phones like the ones mentioned above, or if the phone you want is under $100 (like the HTC First, Galaxy S III and iPhone 4S), getting it for free. So if you have an iPhone 4 and are up for an upgrade and want the iPhone 5, with this deal you can trade-in your 4 and get the 5 for $100 instead of $200.
Now there are a few conditions to this deal. The phone you are trading-in needs to be a smartphone under three years old and be in “good, working condition.” You also will need to go to an AT&T store if you want the instant credit. Once you’re there you can trade-in your old phone and use that $100 credit right away for buying that new one (and if the phone your trading in is worth more than $100 you’ll receive that higher credit instead). All in all, unless you have someone you want to give your old phone to this seems like a pretty great deal. The new phone you want is much cheaper while your old phone gets recycled properly instead of just sitting in a drawer somewhere. AT&T has said that this is a limited time offer (though they haven’t said when it would end), so if you have your eye on a new Galaxy S4 or HTC One you may want to take advantage of this soon.

Deal of the Day: Microsoft Letting Students Try Office 365 For Free For 3 Months

Curious to try out Microsoft’s new Office 365? Just got a new PC or Mac and want a demo version of Office to use so you don’t need to buy it right away? Well you’re in luck as Microsoft just announced a new deal for students that you are going to want to check out.
Usually Microsoft lets people download demo versions of Office for just one month, but starting today Microsoft will allow college students and teachers to get 3 free months of Office 365 and an extra 20 GB of Microsoft’s Skydrive cloud storage (giving you 27 GB of free storage in the cloud. Skydrive is Microsoft’s version of iCloud/Google Drive/Dropbox and allows you to easily access any files you store on there from anywhere you have internet access). All you have to do to get this deal is go to the Office for Students site and sign up using your .edu email address. That’s it and it will get you the free 3 months of Microsoft’s latest and greatest version of Office, including full versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint (if you’re on Windows or Mac) and OneNote (Windows-only). And if you share the offer on Facebook you will get yourself an additional 3 months of free Office.
Office 365 University usually costs $79.99 a year for students (for up to 4 years, after that it is the usual $99.99 a year non-students pay), but with this you can make that deal for cheaper Office last an extra semester longer.

Apple Cuts Prices For 13 Inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display and 13 Inch MacBook Air

The MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro with Retina Display are two of the best computers available today. They are super thin, very fast, have solid battery life, and in the case of the Pro, has an amazing Retina Display that makes everything look great. The problem with both however has been their prices, with the 13 inch Pro with Retina Display starting at a particularly steep $1,700 and the higher spec’d 13 inch Air with 256 GB of storage (the one you’re most likely gonna want because you’re going to want since this has enough storage to last you the next few years) starting at $1,500. This week however Apple gave both the 13 inch Retina Pro and the higher spec’d 13 inch Air some nice price cuts, bringing the basic, 128 GB Retina Pro down $200 to $1,500 and the top Air down $100 to $1,400. If you use Apple’s student discount the prices are even better, with the Retina Pro dropping an extra $100 to $1,400 and the higher end Air going down to $1,349.
We really love the MacBook Pro and Air, and both are great options if you’re looking for a new computer for school. Personally, the 13 inch Retina Pro is the laptop I just upgraded to because it has that excellent portability that you find on the Air but it’s combined with the power the Pro line is known for (oh, and that Retina screen is pretty great too). Both laptops though should be more than fine if you mainly plan on using them for taking notes, writing papers and going online.
One upgrade we recommend however is getting the 256 GB hard drive for either the Pro or Air, particularly if you plan to store a lot of videos, music or photos. It is very hard to upgrade the storage on MacBooks after you buy them, and you’re going to want to make sure this thing is best suited to last for the next few years (if you plan on using your next computer mainly for notes and the internet, or have a backup hard drive for your music, photos and movies the cheaper 128 GB hard drive may work fine for you). The 256 GB 13 inch Retina Pro is now $1,700 without a student discount, $1,600 with (down from nearly $2,000 before).

Windows 8 Gets Expensive Tomorrow, Make Sure To Upgrade For Cheap While You Still Can

Windows 8 has been around since last October, and at just $40 it is a solid upgrade. We still like Windows 8, but tomorrow it’s about to see a major price jump all the way up to $200. You see, back in October when Windows 8 launched, Microsoft offered the Windows 8 Pro upgrade at a special price of just $40 for a limited time. Tomorrow, February 1st, is the day when that “limited time” officially ends. Even if you’re still on the fence about upgrading your Windows XP, Vista or 7 computer to Windows 8 it may be worth looking into buying the upgrade tonight while its $160 cheaper.
Now for students this price jump won’t be as steep as Microsoft will be offering Windows 8 Pro to any US college student or faculty with a .edu email address (so college students only) for $70. That’s still $30 more than the “limited time” pricing but it’s still much better then what you would be spending if you aren’t in college.
In other student news, Microsoft has also announced that starting on February 18th they will be doing a campus tour, visiting over 150 colleges across the US to show off the latest Windows 8 PCs and tablets. To see when they will be visiting a campus near you check out Microsoft’s site here.

Deal of The Day: Amazon Giving Students $50 Off The Kindle Fire HD For The Month of January

Sure the holidays we’re just last week, but if you wanted a new tablet for Winter or Spring Semester, and didn’t get one from Santa, Amazon’s got a great deal for you. For the rest of January, Amazon will be offering students $50 off all versions of the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 (both the WiFi and the WiFi+4G LTE versions). This means you can get the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 for just $249 for the WiFi-only 16 GB version. For a tablet with an amazing HD screen (it’s on the same level as the Retina Display on the iPad 3/4), HD front camera for HD video chat, and access to thousands of Android apps and games from Amazon’s App Store, this looks like a great deal.
To get the deal you need to have a .edu email address, and either be enrolled in or sign up for Amazon Student. For those who don’t know, Amazon Student lets students with a .edu email address get things like free two-day shipping, free release date delivery for things like movies and video games, as well as some special student deals (like this one). Amazon Student is free for the first six months after you sign up, and only $39 a year after that (for the next four years or until you graduate, whichever comes first). The $39 a year adds in all the full benefits of Amazon Prime– which normally costs $79 for those without Amazon Student– such as access to sharing Kindle books with friends and watching videos on Amazon Instant Video (Amazon’s version of Netflix).

Cyber Monday Deal of The Day: 14 inch HP ENVY From Best Buy for $550

Still looking for a good deal on a new computer after Black Friday? Well, tomorrow is Cyber Monday, the internet’s version of Black Friday just without all of this. Like with Black Friday, most major stores– Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, TigerDirect, Target, Staples etc.– will be having big online deals. Unlike Black Friday though a lot of these deals haven’t been announced in advance (Amazon for example won’t start unveiling their deals until midnight EST). Best Buy however has some of their deals up, including what already looks to be one of the best deals we’ll see: an $800 14 inch HP Envy ultrabook for $550.
This HP Envy 14 has pretty much everything you would want in a good Windows 8 laptop: an Intel Core i3 processor, 4 GB of RAM, 500 GB hard drive, two USB 3.0 ports (with one more USB 2.0 port. USB 3.0 means things like backing up your computer to an external hard drive or copying over pictures and videos will go much faster. All USB 3 ports will also work with all older USB cables and devices), and a battery HP says will get you around 7 hours. This also has a 14 inch HD touchscreen so you can get the most out of Windows 8 (though you can’t disconnect it or bend it all the way back to use it like a tablet). Basically, this should be more than fine for doing things like going online, watching videos, writing papers, or using apps.

Here Are Apple’s Black Friday Deals

If you’re looking for a new iPad, iPod or MacBook this holiday season you’re gonna want to listen up, as Apple just revealed their Black Friday deals. As expected there aren’t any major “doorbuster” deals to be found here, but there still are some solid discounts.
The iPad 4 has been given a $41 discount and now starts at $458 for the 16 GB WiFi model (with $51 and $61 discounts for the 32 GB and 64 GB WiFi only versions). The iPad 2 16 GB WiFi model got a $31 discount to $368, though if you want one of these we’d still recommend going with Walmart or Target’s deals instead. The new 5th generation iPod Touch (the one with the color back and 4 inch screen) has also been given a $31 discount and now starts at $268 for the 32 GB version. The older iPod Touch and new iPod Nano were each given their own small discounts, bringing their prices to $178 and $111 respectively.
The MacBook line is where the big discounts happen. Apple has taken $101 off of each of their MacBook lines– the MacBook Air, Pro and Pro with Retina Display. Of course this brings them to the same prices you could get the rest of the year if you use a student discount, with the exception being the base 11 inch MacBook Air which is now $898 (it’s usually $950 with a student discount).
Apple also dropped the prices on their iPad Smart Covers and Smart Cases, as well as for their headphones , routers and wireless mice and keyboards. And no, unfortunately there doesn’t look to be any deals for the iPad Mini or iPhone 5.

Deal of the Day: T-Mobile Offering Most Samsung 4G Phones For Free Today and Tomorrow

While Black Friday is technically still a week away, a lot of companies have decided to start offering some great deals well before then. Several stores such as Staples and Amazon will be having deals all of next week (not just on Friday), and Walmart plans to open their stores at 8 PM on Thursday night instead of 4 AM on Friday. If you’re on T-Mobile well, your big deals are today. Today and tomorrow, November 16th and 17th, T-Mobile will be offering most 4G Samsung phones for free on a new two year contract. So if you are on T-Mobile and really want the Galaxy S III to be your next phone, now looks like the time to buy. The Galaxy Note 2 and 32 GB Galaxy S III are the main exceptions to this deal, but both look to have gotten some big discounts instead (the Note 2 for example is now $200 with a new 2 year contract as opposed to its usual $370).

Back To School Deal Of The Day: Get A New MacBook Air For $849 From Best Buy

Still looking for a new MacBook Air or Pro for school this year? Well then you may wanna check out Best Buy. As part of their back-to-school promotion, Best Buy is giving any current or incoming college student with a .edu email address $100 off any new MacBook. Now while that sounds a lot like what Apple is doing, it’s even better. Best Buy is doing this on top of the price you would pay for the MacBook had you bought directly from Apple with a student discount.
In other words, look at it like this. The latest, cheapest version of the 11 inch MacBook Air (with 64 GB of storage) normally costs $999, or $949 with the student discount when you buy directly from Apple. Best Buy starts the pricing for this Air at $949, and when you then add their student discount you’re down to $849. The more powerful, base model of the 13 inch MacBook Air (with 128 GB of storage) is normally priced at $1,199, or $1,149 with the student discount from Apple. Best Buy starts the pricing for this same Air at $1,139, so with this $100 student discount this Air is now only $1,039… you get the point. It’s a great deal.
To get the deal all you have to do is go to Best Buy’s Student Deals site, enter that .edu email and print the coupon. That’s it.
Now as great as this is there are a few downsides. The first is you’ll need that .edu email address, so if you’re in high school that might be hard to get (though you could ask a friend or sibling to let you use theirs). You also can’t customize the MacBooks like you could if you ordered directly from Apple’s site, and Apple also gives you an $100 iTunes Gift Card as part of their back to school deal, something Best Buy doesn’t seem to match.
Oh, and you can only use the coupon once and you have to use it in a Best Buy store and have your student ID with you. Sorry no online ordering.
But hey, $849 for the latest MacBook Air is definitely one of the best back to school deals we’ve seen this year.

AT&T Releases Galaxy S II Skyrocket and HTC Vivid– Drops Prices By $100 Each (UPDATED)

Today is November 6th, and you know what that means– AT&T’s first 4G LTE phones are finally available. As promised, AT&T today released their fist two superphones capable of using their brand new, blazing fast 4G LTE network: the HTC Vivid and Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket. Not expected? AT&T has apparently dropped the price of these two beasts by $100 each, with the Vivid now available for just $100 while the Galaxy S II Skyrocket is now just $150 (both with new 2 year contracts and data plans).
Now we don’t know why AT&T dropped their prices or if this is just a temporary thing, but we’re not complaining (I mean, it beats the garbage out of the $300 Verizon usually charges for their new, top of the line 4G LTE phones). At these prices both of these phones look to be amazing deals, and if you’re looking for a new AT&T phone we really recommend you look into picking one of these up while you still can.
UPDATE: Well it was fun while it lasted. Looks like AT&T has switched the prices back to the originally announced $200 for the Vivid and $250 for the Skyrocket. So, anyone able to score one of these at the cheaper price?
