New Droids Coming This Week?
If your on Verizon and looking for a new Android phone you may wanna hold off getting that Droid Incredible or Motorola Droid just yet, as Motorola and Verizon have some big news, and when I say big news I mean REALLY BIG news.
Ok, so as some of you may have noticed, this headline mentions “Droids” (emphasis on the “s”), and you know what– there’s a really good reason for that, like 2 new Droids. Yes, 2! And both look to be insane.

The first phone we’re gonna talk about is the aptly named Droid 2, which is a proper successor to the very successful original Droid 1, and design wise looks very similar. It’s got that fully QWERTY keyboard (with improved keys that should be easier to press and not as flat as with the Droid 1), large touchscreen (along the lines of the Droid’s nice and big 3.7 inch one), WiFi, 3G and GPS, 8 GB of built in storage with a microSD card slot to add more (rumor goes that the microSD card slot also comes with an 8 GB card meaning you got 16 GB right out of the box), a 5 megapixel camera, and Android 2.2.
Android 2.2, for those who don’t know, is the next version of Google’s Android OS and among other things brings along improvements like: a cleaner standard interface (though not as nice as HTC’s Sense, it still offers nice features like buttons on the dock for going to the phone or to the web and an iPad-like “pinch to open” to quickly peek at photos), the ability to turn your phone into a mobile hotspot (ala EVO), faster speed particularly in apps and games as well as a much faster web browser, and built-in support for Adobe Flash 10.1— meaning you finally can get access to THE FULL WEB including sites like Hulu which has their videos only in Flash (the reason why you can’t see them on an iPhone). Just like the Droid was the first phone to launch Android 2.1, word has it that the Droid 2 will be the first to launch with Android 2.2.
While Motorola and Verizon haven’t yet confirmed this, rumors have it that we should see the Droid 2 launch very soon, like over the next couple of weeks.
Now this, this phone is a beast. The Droid X looks to be just insane– 4.3 inch screen (actually like the EVO), the ability to capture 720p HD video (meaning either a 5 or 8 megapixel camera at the least), HDMI out for watching those HD videos on a big screen, 1 GHZ processor (a first for Motorola Droids), 3G, WiFi and GPS, as well as Android 2.1 with a new, sleeker, sicker version of Motorola’s MOTOBLUR nicknamed “Ninja Blur” as it takes all the social connectedness of MOTOBLUR and let’s it run in the background without bothering the user (though we have seen reports that it’s running the new MOTOBLUR AND Android 2.2! Let’s keep those fingers crossed people!). Yeah, this is crazy.
Best part? Motorola and Verizon have acknowledged this phone’s existence on their respective sites (here for Verizon, here for Motorola), meaning that more info can’t be that far away. Oh, and Motorola and Verizon have sent out invites for a “Next Generation of Droid” event for Wednesday (yes, that’s the day before the iPhone 4 comes out). You can be sure that we’ll have all the info on what goes down back here ASAP.
Anyone else ready for new DROIDS?
