Samsung Announces Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9- Looks To Give The iPad A Strong Run For Your Money
Samsung has been pretty quiet when it came to new info on its Galaxy Tab line of tablets while everyone else has been announcing or releasing their own. Today that all ended as Samsung announced two new editions of its Galaxy Tab line, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1– and both look to give the iPad 2 and all other tablets a strong run for your money.
Galaxy Tab 10.1
This is the first Galaxy Tab announced today and its a beast. With specs like a 10.1 inch HD screen, 4G (HSPA+, LTE and WiMax versions will be coming so you can get it on Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T and Sprint), 2 megapixel front camera and 720p HD back camera, a crazy thin design (it’s thinner than the iPad 2!), 10 hour battery, surround sound speakers, and a custom version of Android 3.0 Honeycomb with TouchWiz 4.0. That last point is what makes this all really interesting. With TouchWiz 4.0 Samsung is the first to really add something software-wise to Android 3.0, and from what we saw during the announcement, it looks pretty sick.
The new TouchWiz not only offers a more customizable homescreen (similar to whats been on any Samsung phone the last few years), but a great way to do multitasking with its mini app tray you have easy access to pull up apps like a calculator, calendar or phone right on top of the existing app you’re in– no switching back and forth. Throw in the new Social Hub (for keeping all your emails, IMs and Facebook messages and friends’ statuses in order) and the Media Hub (Samsung’s version of iTunes with the ability to download new music, movies and TV shows right to your Samsung device) and the Galaxy Tab is even more powerful.
Galaxy Tab 8.9
The Galaxy Tab 8.9 is as you’d expect, a smaller version of the 10.1 inch beast perfect for those who want something a bit more mobile. It features pretty much all the same features including the HD screen, cameras, dual core processor, surround sound speaker and 10 hour battery, just does it a more pocket-able design (it fits in a suit jacket pocket, so it shouldn’t take up any space in your already packed school bag!).
But all this wasn’t even the best part….
Samsung also took off the wraps on how much these bad boys would cost, and when we said it would give the iPad a run for your money, here’s why. Both Galaxy Tabs come in either 16 GB or 32 GB of storage and the 10.1 WiFi-only will cost $499 for 16 GB or $599 for 32 GB (same as iPad 2) with the 8.9 WiFi-only coming in at an amazing $469 for 16 GB and $569 for 32 GB ($30 cheaper than the iPad 2!). The 10.1 inch WiFi-only Tab will launch June 8th, with the 8.9 inch WiFi-only and the 4G versions said to be coming later this summer.
