AT&T Announces Their First 4G LTE Phones: Meet The HTC Vivid and Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket
It’s been a long time coming but AT&T has finally taken the wraps off of their first real 4G phones, the HTC Vivid and Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket. Now we say real 4G here because unlike all of AT&T’s other “4G” phones released this year (like the Infuse 4G, Atrix 4G, Torch 4G 9810, Galaxy S II etc.), these bad boys run on AT&T’s much faster, brand new LTE network instead of their upgraded 3G HSPA+ network (which they also called 4G. This HSPA+ network was the “4G “in those earlier”4G” phones and while it was slightly faster than 3G it was nowhere near as fast as this. We know this is confusing and we’ll have more on the differences between AT&T’s 4G networks soon). Anyways, not only will these new LTE phones be crazy fast– AT&T says their LTE network is up to 10x faster than 3G, or in other words, its as fast as your home internet— they’re some of the most impressive Android phones AT&T has released yet.
If you’re looking for a new AT&T phone anytime soon, these are definitely two you should be checking out. So what are you waiting for? Read on for all the info.
Let’s start with the HTC Vivid. While the Vivid sadly doesn’t have built-in Beats, it is still a pretty awesome phone particularly if you like giant screens and amazing cameras. Here are the specs:
- 4.5 inch qHD screen— This isn’t as powerful as Verizon’s upcoming HTC Rezound’s 720p HD screen, but it is pretty solid and should make everything– checking Facebook, watching videos, reading texts– look sharp and crystal clear.
- Dual-core 1.2 GHZ processor with 1 GB of RAM— As expected on any superphone today, this should mean everything on your phone, from opening apps to gaming and multitasking, will run fast and without any freezes or lags.
- 8 megapixel back camera with 1.3 megapixel front camera for HD video chat– The back camera can also record videos at full 1080p HD and has dual-mics for better audio capture (so your videos also sound great).
- Android 2.3 Gingerbread with HTC Sense
- 16 GB built-in storage— So you can load this up with your videos and music right out of the box.
And of course this packs support for AT&T’s 4G LTE network so it can also make full use of the much faster 4G network once it’s available in your area (as of this Sunday AT&T will only have their LTE network running in 9 cities across the country, with plans to add another 6 cities by the end of 2011. The Vivid also supports AT&T’s 4G HSPA+ network– which is now available in most of the country– so you have a solid backup if you don’t have LTE coverage).
The best part of the Vivid though? The price. Unlike Verizon (which usually charges $300 for their new LTE phones), the Vivid will only be $200 with a new 2 year contract and data plan when it launches this Sunday, November 6th. For a phone this powerful this is a pretty great price.

Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket
AT&T will also this Sunday be releasing a 4G LTE version of their hit Samsung Galaxy S II phone called the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket. And like the Vivid, it’s pretty incredible.
Specs-wise the Skyrocket is pretty similar to the Galaxy S II released just one month ago (yeah, if you bought one you may want to try to swap it out for this if you still can) with equally impressive specs like: a 4.5 inch Super AMOLED Plus screen (slightly bigger than AT&T’s first Galaxy S II, but like with the Vivid everything and anything you view on here will look incredible), 8 megapixel back camera with 2 megapixel front camera (for higher quality video chatting), ridiculously thin design (we’re not sure if it’s pencil thin but as you can see it looks pretty close!), Android 2.3 Gingerbread (with Samsung’s latest TouchWiz 4.0), 16 GB of built-in storage, and a super fast dual-core 1.5 GHZ processor with 1 GB of RAM (so you should never see any freezing or lag even when doing intense things like multitasking or gaming).
And of course this also can take full use of AT&T’s brand new 4G LTE network (and AT&T’s slower HSPA+ 4G network when not in LTE coverage) for crazy fast 4G data speeds.
The Skyrocket will be available this Sunday, November 6th, for a slightly more expensive but still pretty solid $250 with new 2 year contract and data plan.
