Top 5 New and Upcoming AT&T Phones: Summer/Fall 2013
So AT&T users– you’ve got an upgrade coming up sometime over the next couple of months and while you like some of the phones already out there, you really wanna know what AT&T has got planned during the next few weeks or months so you don’t go out and buy something now only to really regret it a week later. We’re here to help. With all the excitement around new phones like the Lumia 1020 and Moto X, and rumors about the Galaxy Note 3 and iPhone 5S, we figured that now was a good time to wrap everything up.
So without further ado, here are 5 of the best new phones that either available now at AT&T or are coming soon. If you’re on AT&T and have an upgrade coming up these are some of the phones you’re going to want to take a look at.
Nokia Lumia 1020
Put simply, if you love taking pictures with your phone you’re going to want to get this.
The Lumia 1020 is Nokia’s latest Windows Phone to hit AT&T and it’s insane 41 megapixel PureView camera is probably the best camera ever put on a phone. If you can, head in to your local AT&T store and try it out for yourself– it’s that good. On top of the great camera, the Lumia 1020 also has a nice, thin design, 32GB of storage (with another 50GB of cloud storage available for free from AT&T’s Digital Locker), 1.5 GHZ dual-core processor, and 4.5 inch 720p HD screen that looks great even in direct sunlight. We’ve had a chance to spend a few minutes with the Lumia 1020 and we gotta say it lives up to the hype. The pictures we’ve taken look fantastic, things opened quickly and it generally worked great.
Of course the 1020 runs Windows Phone 8 not iOS or Android so you’re not yet gonna have official apps for things like Snapchat and Instagram and Windows Phone still trails in getting new apps like Candy Crush at the same time iOS and Android get them (Windows Phone now has around 170,000 apps compared to iOS and Android each having close to 1 million). The apps situation is slowly getting better and many popular apps either are available or there are replacement apps (like Instance for uploading and checking Instagram), but again it’s still limited apps-wise compared to Android and the iPhone.
The Lumia 1020 is available now for $300 with a new 2 year contract.
Have you ever wanted to completely customize the look of your phone? Like choose how the color of the front and back, engrave a personal message into the it or decide if the back is made from plastic or wood? Well, with the Moto X you soon will be able to.
The Moto X is the latest phone from Motorola (which is now owned by Google) and is the first phone that Google helped Motorola design. As you would expect from a Google phone, there are a lot of really cool features in here. First of course are the colors. As mentioned above you’ll be able to completely customize the colors of the phone just like you would on a car. All you have to do is go to the soon to launch Moto Maker website and from there you can choose pretty much any color you want for the back of your phone (or if you want, different types of wood) and Google/Motorola will build it and get it to you within 4 days. It’s pretty slick.
But that’s not the only cool thing about the Moto X. Want to quickly take a picture? Just shake your wrist like you’re opening a door and the camera app opens. Want to check the time? The Moto X has a sensor that knows when you’re taking your phone out of your pocket and will show you the time and any new notifications you have without you having to touch the power button. The Moto X will even recognize your voice so you can use Google Now (Android’s much better version of Siri) by just saying “ok, Google Now” without having press a button on your phone. Oh, and the phone can also sense when you’re in a car and will automatically switch to a “driving mode” that reads whose calling and texting you out loud so you can focus on the road.
Inside the Moto X is everything you would expect to find in a top Android phone including a fast processor (not as fast as the Galaxy S4 or HTC One but still very quick), a 4.7 inch 720p HD screen, 10 megapixel back camera with front camera for HD video chat and runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.
There’s no word on when the Moto X will be available but Motorola has promised that it’ll be here around “the end of the summer,” so hopefully that means sometime in the next couple of weeks. Pricing will be $199 for the 16 GB version and $249 for the 32 GB version.
The BlackBerry Z10 that came out earlier this year was the first BlackBerry to run the new BlackBerry 10. While the Z10 was a solid phone, BlackBerry is hard at work with a bigger successor that should to be coming soon. The Z30 is said to have a 5 inch HD screen (up from 4.2 inches on the Z10), 16 GB of storage and an 8 megapixel back camera with 2 megapixel front camera for HD video chat, and run the latest version of BlackBerry 10, version 10.2. BlackBerry 10.2 is said to bring a number of improvements like the ability to directly respond to messages and BBMs (meaning you can respond without having to switch into a different app), a built-in Evernote app and the ability to run apps made for Android 4.2.2 (yes, BlackBerry 10 can run Android apps as long as developers publish them to the App World). Otherwise it’s not supposed to be a major leap from the Z10, but if you like BlackBerry 10 and just wanted it on a bigger screen, here you go.
No word on when the BlackBerry Z30 will launch, but it should be coming to AT&T before the end of the year.
Samsung Galaxy Note 3
Last fall Samsung announced the Galaxy Note 2, a great device for those who wanted a giant phone that was also a mini-tablet. This year Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy Note 3 a bit earlier, on September 4th. As with last year’s Galaxy Note 2, the Note 3 is expected to be on every carrier– AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile.
As for what will be new in the Note 3, it’s expected to have a 5.68 inch 1080p HD screen (an improvement over last year’s very good 720p HD 5.5 inch screen), a fast processor with 3 GB of RAM, a 13 megapixel back camera with optical image stabilization (so you’re pictures look great even if your hand isn’t perfectly still when you take them), 16, 32, or 64 GB of storage, and a bigger battery which should only improve on the excellent battery life that was in the Note 2. Design wise there have been some rumors that the Note 3 will look very different from the Note 2, but most of the more recent ones (like these from SamMobile) suggest that it will actually look a lot like the Note 2. The Note 3 is also expected to keep the S-Pen that the Note line is known for.
Release date and pricing is still not known, but we expect all that to be revealed at Samsung’s September 4th event.
Ah yes, the iPhone 5S. The iPhone 5S is said to be announced only a few days after Samsung announces the Note 3, on September 10th. Unlike the Note 3 though not much is really known about what will be in the next iPhone. The latest rumors are that it will have a faster processor (the “A7”), a slightly bigger battery that should mean better battery life, an improved camera with better flash and a fingerprint sensor inside the home button for better security and possibly using your phone as a credit card. There are also rumors about a potential “gold” color option (as well as black and white), as well as some rumors that the next iPhone will switch to a bigger 4.3 inch or 4.7 inch screen.
The iPhone 5S (and the cheaper, more colorful 5C) are expected to be announced in a little under a month and we expect much more to be revealed as we get closer to that date.
So there you have it, 5 of the phones that either just arrived or are rumored to be coming very soon to an AT&T store near you. Of course, if you’re looking for a great phone now before school starts and can’t wait, AT&T’s got plenty of those too including the iPhone 5, HTC One and Galaxy S4. As always we’re sure AT&T has a lot more planned up its sleeve and we’ll of course keep you updated on whatever awesome new news they announce.
