iphone 5s and iphone 5c

As you’ve heard, this week Apple unveiled not one but two new iPhones, the long rumored iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S. From all the rumors and leaks it seems that we’ve seen everything with these phones months ago but this week Apple made it all official.

Both the iPhone 5S and 5C go on sale next Friday (and the 5C is available for pre-order tomorrow), but to help you decide on which iPhone is right for you we’ve rounded up everything that’s new and what you need to know about in each phone below.

iOS 7 Is Coming September 18th, iWork Free For All New iOS Devices

ios 7 iphone 5

Waiting for iOS 7? Well, your wait is now almost over. Today Apple announced that their new OS will be available for download starting on September 18th. The free update will work on the iPhone 4 or later, iPad 2 or later, iPad Mini and 5th generation iPod Touch.

Apple also added some new features to iOS 7 like the ability to tell you how long it will take to get to work or school right from the Notification Center, the ability for Siri to search Wikipedia and Twitter, as well as some new ringtones. The bigger news though is what Apple did with the iWork, iMovie and iPhoto apps– making all of them free. If you get a new iOS device (like one of the new iPhones also announced today), when you’re setting it up you’ll be prompted with a screen that lets you download Pages (Apple’s version of Microsoft Word), Numbers (Apple’s version of Excel), Keynote (Apple’s version of PowerPoint) as well as iMovie and iPhoto for free. Pages, Keynote and Numbers cost $10 each in the App Store today, while iMovie and iPhoto each cost $5 (GarageBand will still cost $5). Basically Apple just gave away $40 worth of awesome, useful apps for free.

There’s no word yet on if current iOS users will be able to get these apps for free as well or if they’ll only be for people who buy a new iOS device. In the meantime check out our earlier post here for everything that’s new in iOS 7 and back up you’re phone. It has a major update coming very soon.

Where’s BBM for iPhone? Apparently It’s Waiting To Be Approved

bbm iphone android announcement

With BBM for Android leaking on video last week and looking like it was ready to go, a lot of people began wondering about the status of BBM for iOS. BBM for iOS was announced  earlier this year at the same time as the Android version with all the same features, and like BBM for Android, was promised to be coming before the end of the summer (technically September 21st). Ever since that announcement though things have been very quiet with no new updates on when to expect the app. Well, we now have gotten a semi-official update that points to the app being almost ready to go.

This update comes from a tweet from Alex Kinsella, BlackBerry’s Senior Strategic Account Manager. According to Kinsella, the BBM for iOS app was submitted to the App Store for review “2 weeks ago.” All apps that are in Apple’s App Store need to be approved before they make it into the store, a process that sometimes takes days but at times can also take weeks. While we don’t know what exactly is holding up the BBM app’s approval by Apple, with iOS 7 (and new iPhones) only days away it is possible things might be a little backed up as developers are rushing to update their apps for the new OS.

The good news though is that according to this tweet BlackBerry’s work on the app itself is done and it’s all on Apple to approve and release it. Actual BBM for iPhone should be here before the end of summer, just as BlackBerry promised.

Here We Go: Apple Sends Out Invite For An iPhone Event Next Week

apple iphone 5s invite

It’s been rumored for months and the date was leaked a few weeks ago but now it’s all official. Apple this afternoon sent out invites for an event next week where they are expected to announce two new iPhones, the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C.

The iPhone 5S is said to be the successor to the iPhone 5 and have a similar design with a faster processor, larger battery, 13 megapixel camera with improved flash, and a fingerprint sensor in the home button. The 5S is also said to come in a gold/”champagne” color in addition to the usual white or black.

The iPhone 5C is a cheaper iPhone that is said to be replacing the iPhone 4S at the bottom of Apple’s line-up. It will be made of plastic instead of the aluminum the 5 and 5S are made of, but will come in a wide range of colors including yellow, pink, light green, light blue and white. Yes, the same colors as the ones seen on the dots on the Apple invite above. The 5C is said to have many of the iPhone 5/5S’s features like running iOS 7 and having a 4 inch Retina display, but it won’t have all the newest parts like the faster processor, 13 megapixel camera and fingerprint scanner. Then again, since it’s supposed to be several hundred dollars cheaper than the 5S we wouldn’t expect it to.

Both the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C are expected to be released about 10 days after Apple’s event, on September 20th.

There are also rumors that Apple might use this event to update the iPad, iPad Mini and MacBook Pro but most expect those to be updated in October as Apple has done in the past. Whatever Apple does announce though you know we’ll have it covered for you here.

All Things D: The Next iPhone Will Be Announced On September 10th

ios 7 iphone 5

Get ready because it’s that time of year again. No, not the end of summer or returning of school, but time for a new iPhone. Over the past few years Apple has held events in September to announce their newest iPhone. In 2011 it was for the 4S and last year it was for the 5. If these latest reports from All Things D are true (and they have been in the past) then mark down September 10th as that will apparently be the day that Apple reveals their next iPhone, the iPhone 5S/6.

Now what exactly will be in the next iPhone is anyone’s guess at this point. Most expect the next iPhone to be faster and have a better camera than the iPhone 5, but beyond that the rumors are really all over the place– from a fingerprint sensor, to a bigger screen to more colors beyond black and white. And of course there are a lot of rumors on if the name of this next iPhone will be the iPhone 5S or if it will have a big enough upgrade to go straight to iPhone 6.

iphone 5c rumored colorsThe rumored, more colorful, iPhone 5C

On top of all that there is also a lot of talk about Apple coming out with a new plastic, cheaper and more colorful iPhone called the “iPhone 5C” in addition to the new iPhone 5S/6. The iPhone 5C is said to have an 8-megapixel camera, 4-inch Retina Display and cost $300-$400 without a contract (by comparison the 16 GB iPhone 5 starts at $650 without a contract, which would mean that this new iPhone would most likely be free or at the most $100 with a new 2-year contract). We’re sure that the rumors on both of these iPhones will only get crazier as we get closer to September 10th and we’ll make sure to keep you updated. One thing we do expect any new iPhone to have however is iOS 7, the next, redesigned version of iOS.

So get ready. The countdown to the next iPhone begins now.

The App Store Turns Five This Week and Apple’s Giving Out Free Apps and Games To Celebrate

apple 5 years app store birthday

It may be crazy to think but this Wednesday the App Store will turn 5 years old. Put simply it’s been an amazing 5 years with the App Store now home to over 900,000 apps and over 50 billion downloads. To celebrate this momentous occasion Apple has made five of the App Store’s most popular games and five of the most popular apps free for a limited time. The games include hits like Tiny Wings (and Tiny Wings HD for iPad), Where’s My Water?Badland, Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, and Infinity Blade II. In the apps area, Apple is giving away Barefoot World AtlasDay One (a journal app), How to Cook Everything, Over (a photo editing app) and Traktor DJ. All of these apps usually cost between $2 and $20 (Traktor DJ is the $20 one if you were wondering), making this a very nice gift from Apple.

The App Store officially doesn’t turn 5 until this Wednesday and we’ll keep you updated if Apple has anything else planned to celebrate. In the meantime, head on over to App Store from your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch for all the details on these birthday deals.

Apple Launches 2013 Back To School Deal- Get A Gift Card With Any New Mac, iPad or iPhone

apple back to school 2013

It may be a little later than usual but today Apple revealed their 2013 back-to-school deal. The deal is similar to what it has been the past few years: when you buy any new Mac or iPad using your college ID, Apple will give you an iTunes gift card worth either $50 (if you buy an iPad) or $100 (if you buy a Mac). Apple also has now expanded the program to include the iPhone, so if you use your student ID to buy one you will also get a $50 iTunes gift card. And as usual, when it comes to Macs this is all on top of the regular discount Apple gives students (between $50-$200 off new computers. Unfortunately there is no student discount for the iPad or iPhone).

Apple says the deal will work for those in college, accepted to a college, or for a parent buying for a college student as long as you buy that new Mac/iPad/iPhone from an Apple Store (physical or online) or from one of their Apple campus stores. The deal runs until September 6th, so if you were waiting for Apple’s back-to-school deals before you bought that new MacBook or iPad, here you go.

Are These The First Shots of the iPhone 5S?

iphone 5s june leak 1

While Apple has been pretty quiet when it came to releasing major new hardware during the first half of 2013 (so far all they’ve released is an updated iPod Touch 16GB and an updated MacBook Air with amazing battery life), that hasn’t stopped the rumors about the next iPhone, the “iPhone 5S.” Over the past two weeks rumors on this next iPhone have really picked up and it seems we may have even finally gotten the first pictures of the 5S (or whatever it will be called). And as many would have guessed, it looks a lot like the iPhone 5.

iphone 5s june leak 1The rumored new flash on the iPhone 5S

These new 5S pictures come from MacRumors and while they show a design that’s practically identical to the iPhone 5 there are already a few interesting pieces worth noting. Assuming these are legit, it looks like the 5S will have a slightly bigger battery than the 5 (about 8%-9% bigger or 5.92 Whr compared to the 5.45 Whr on the 5– hopefully this will mean better battery life), while running a new processor (possibly the A7) and will sport a second, different colored flash that will supposedly make low-light pictures look a lot better. That is all that seems to be noticeable from these leaked 5S pictures, though other reports– like this one from Reuters— say that the 5S will come in multiple colors with new features like a fingerprint scanner and a bigger screen (we obviously can’t tell any of that from these pictures).

Now we know that some of you are thinking that it’s a bit early for iPhone 5S leaks, it is possible these are legitimate pictures of the 5S once you consider how long it takes for Apple to make the millions of phones it needs for a new iPhone launch. Apple needs to start mass producing these phones months before they go on sale, so around this time would make sense if a new iPhone is really coming this fall. Of course it’s also important to remember that these are just rumors and since Apple hasn’t confirmed anything about any new iPhone all of this might be wrong and the next iPhone might be completely different from these rumors. Basically, take all of this with a grain of salt.

The next iPhone is expected to be released this fall (around September/October just like the 4S and 5 were) and you can bet that as we get closer to that time we’ll be seeing a lot more rumors like these. In the meantime, what do you want to see in the next iPhone?

iOS 7: What’s New, What’s Different and What You Should Care About

ios 7 iphone 5

As you’ve probably heard by now, if you have a recent iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad you’re device is about to look very different  come this fall. Earlier this week at their annual WWDC event Apple didn’t just give the MacBook Air a nice update but announced the future of iOS, iOS 7. In addition to adding some new features, with iOS 7 Apple decided to completely change the look of iOS, updating the design to one that is more modern and “flat.”

Here’s a quick rundown on some of the things that are new  and the things you should care about in iOS 7.

Apple Updates The MacBook Air- This Is The Perfect Back To School Computer

macbook air 2013 update

A few weeks ago we mentioned how there were some pretty big things about to happen in terms of new computers. Well today at Apple’s annual WWDC conference Apple gave the MacBook Air a pretty major update, one that was well worth waiting for.

In that earlier post we mentioned the importance of Intel’s new Core processors (also known as “Haswell”) when it came to buying a new computer because of the major promises it offered for performance and battery life improvements. How big is this update? Enough for Apple to say that their new MacBook Airs will get all-day battery life. That’s right, not 5 hours or 7 hours, but 9 hours on the 11 inch Air and 12 hours on the 13 inch Air. Basically, these new MacBook Airs should easily get you through the day without having to find an outlet. In addition to all that Apple gave the Air a few “future-proof” upgrades including support for the newest version of WiFi (called “ac.” It’s faster and has better range than older WiFi networks and will be great as more people upgrade their routers to support this new standard over the next few years).

The good news doesn’t end there, Apple also doubled the storage on the base MacBook Airs with 128GB of storage now the standard on both the 11 and 13 inch models (it used to be a very weak 64GB on the cheapest 11 inch Air). For $200 more you could double that storage to 256GB. And while the Air didn’t get upgraded to a “Retina display,” it still has all the things we loved about it like that awesome, thin design and FaceTime HD camera. It also keeps the same prices as before, and starts at $999 for the base 11 inch version (or $949 with a student discount).

The MacBook Air was already one of the best laptops available before this update. With more storage, faster speeds and insane battery life it pretty much seals it. If you’re looking for a new computer anytime soon you should definitely look at this.

The new MacBook Air is available now on Apple’s online store.
