It’s Here: iOS 7 Is Now Available For Download

iO S 7 iphone 5s

It’s time. As expected Apple has made iOS 7 available to download right now. If you’ve got an iPhone (4, 4S or 5), iPad (2,3,4 and Mini) or 5th generation iPod touch then connect to WiFi and go to Settings–> General–> Software Update to grab the new software.

iOS 7 brings a lot of new things to make your old iDevice seem new again including new colorful icons, a better notification center and better multitasking, iTunes Radio (Apple’s version of Pandora that’s free to stream with ads), a new Photos app, and much improved Siri. It also brings Control Center, probably the most useful new feature that makes it much easier to do things like adjust brightness, turn off WiFi/Bluetooth and get to the flashlight just by swiping up from the bottom of your iPhone/iPad/iPod. For those looking for the full wrap up of everything the new iOS has to offer we’ve got all the details on what’s new here .

So get to downloading and let us know what you think.

Reminder: iOS 7 Comes Out Today

ios 7 iphone 5

With the new iPhone 5C and 5S hitting stores this Friday it’s easy to forget that a huge update is coming out to current iPhone owners today. That’s right today is the day iOS 7 comes to the iPhone (4,4S and 5), iPad (2,3,4 and Mini) and 5th generation iPod Touch.

Now while many expected it to be available at 12:01 AM, Apple rarely has released major updates at midnight and usual doesn’t release new updates until the early afternoon. iOS 5 and iOS 6 were both released at around 1 PM Eastern (10 AM for those on the West Coast), and we’d expect them to release iOS 7 around 1 PM this afternoon as well. The good news is that still gives you some time to backup your iPhone to iCloud or your computer before you do it.

Now for those not sure how to update it’s pretty simple. Just connect to WiFi on your iDevice and go to Settings, General, Software Update. It’ll download and install from there and you can also keep using your device while it’s downloading (you can also always connect your iPad/iPhone/iPod to iTunes on your computer and do it from there). Assuming you’re on a decent WiFi connection and Apple’s servers aren’t completely killed by the initial demand you should be able to download and have the update installed within a half hour. And while the update shouldn’t affect any pictures, apps or other things stored on your phone it’s probably a good idea to back it up first before you update just to be safe.

iOS 7 is a pretty major update for iOS and if you thought your current iPhone was looking a bit old this will definitely help make it feel a bit newer. For those who don’t know what’s so great about iOS 7, check out our earlier post about what’s new here.

iOS 7 Is Coming September 18th, iWork Free For All New iOS Devices

Waiting for iOS 7? Well, your wait is now almost over. Today Apple announced that their new OS will be available for download starting on September 18th. The free update will work on the iPhone 4 or later, iPad 2 or later, iPad Mini and 5th generation iPod Touch.

Apple also added some new features to iOS 7 like the ability to tell you how long it will take to get to work or school right from the Notification Center, the ability for Siri to search Wikipedia and Twitter, as well as some new ringtones. The bigger news though is what Apple did with the iWork, iMovie and iPhoto apps– making all of them free. If you get a new iOS device (like one of the new iPhones also announced today), when you’re setting it up you’ll be prompted with a screen that lets you download Pages (Apple’s version of Microsoft Word), Numbers (Apple’s version of Excel), Keynote (Apple’s version of PowerPoint) as well as iMovie and iPhoto for free. Pages, Keynote and Numbers cost $10 each in the App Store today, while iMovie and iPhoto each cost $5 (GarageBand will still cost $5). Basically Apple just gave away $40 worth of awesome, useful apps for free.

There’s no word yet on if current iOS users will be able to get these apps for free as well or if they’ll only be for people who buy a new iOS device. In the meantime check out our earlier post here for everything that’s new in iOS 7 and back up you’re phone. It has a major update coming very soon.

Temple Run 2 Now Available For iOS, Coming To Android Next Week

temple run 2

One of the most popular and addicting games for the iPhone and iPad has finally gotten a sequel. Yes, today is the day Temple Run 2 hits the App Store, and like the original, it is free to download.

While the idea and controls behind the game are the same, Temple Run 2 brings some much nicer graphics, a new course with new obstacles as well as new power ups and the ability to ride in a cart and zip-line. Oh, and you now will be chased by a “bigger monkey.”

As big fans of the original Temple Run we’ve already downloaded the game on our iPhone 5 and we gotta say, it’s a pretty great update. We really love the new graphics and the new course keeps things challenging. It’s the same great Temple Run we all know and love, just now even better. This should be a great time waster for the spring semester.

Oh, and don’t worry Android users, video game site Polygon talked with Imangi– the creators of the Temple Run games– and Temple Run 2 should be in the Google Play Store and Amazon Appstore next week.

So what are you waiting for? Go download Temple Run 2 from the iTunes App Store and let us know what you think.

Is Facebook Finally Bringing Video Chat To The iPhone?

facebook skype video chat

Facebook Video Chat– coming soon to the iPhone?

With Facebook Video Chat having been available for Windows and Mac for almost a year now, it seemed like it would only be a matter of time before they brought the feature over to their mobile apps. And according to the site 9to5Mac, that time is finally almost here.

facebook messenger video chat

The folks over at 9to5Mac have gotten a sneak peak at a beta for an upcoming update to Facebook’s Messenger app for iPhone. In addition to the usual bug-fixes and performance improvements expected in a normal update they found this: the ability to make Skype Video Chats right from your iPhone/iPod Touch just like you already can from your computer. Making a video call is pretty simple too– if the person who you’re talking to is at their computer or on iPhone/iTouch you’ll see a blue arrow next to their name. Tap that arrow and you’re calling them.

9to5Mac also says that Facebook has a similar update planned for the Android version of the Messenger app (as well as a version of the Messenger app for the iPad), but that will probably come after the iPhone gets its update this summer.

Looking For Textbooks For The Upcoming School Year? Then You Should Definitely Check Out Amazon

kindle textbook rentals

Viewing Kindle Textbooks from your computer

Before you run out to buy those textbooks for the upcoming school year you should really first go to Amazon. Amazon’s Kindle bookstore is now renting out textbooks at up to 80% off the price of the paper version of the same textbook. Yeah, this could be some major savings.

So here’s how the new textbook renting service works. You download the Amazon Kindle app for your PC, Mac, phone or tablet (that’s right– you don’t even need a Kindle), find the textbook you need in the Textbooks Store on Amazon’s site (they have “tens of thousands” available),  pick how long you need it for (anywhere from 30 days to a 360 days) and check out. That’s it. And if you find out that you need more time you can always extend the rental (from one more day to however many days you need to even buying the textbook outright if that makes more sense for you).

Once you check out you can read your textbook on any of the above devices so long as it has that Kindle app installed. You can even make notes which are saved online (at kindle.amazon.com) and viewable even after you “returned” the textbook (and if you re-rent the textbook later your notes will return to the places you made them).

So yeah, the textbook you need, for when you need it, at a much cheaper price AND it can fit anywhere from your computer to your pocket? Sounds like a great deal to us.

For more info on this awesome new deal from Amazon see their site here. If you want to see if they have the textbooks you need you can search their entire store here. And stay tuned– we’ve got a lot more to come to help make sure you’re ready for the upcoming school year.
