PSN Down? [Update– All Looks to Be Working Again]

If you haven’t been able to get any trophies, load any data (or lost any data like trophies or saved games), sign onto the PlayStation Network, or even play any games on your PS3 over the last 24 hours then you’re probably confused as I was initially and pretty upset. What happened? Its because you have a “fat” PS3, otherwise known as any PS3 that is not a PS3 Slim. The error (Error 8001050F for those who want specifics) is why us ”fat” PS3 users have noticed that our date has gone back into the past to the mystical year of 1999, or 12/31/99 to be exact. Y2K anyone? This internal clock error has been the cause of failed PlayStation Network logins, and even the inability to play certain video rentals and games! Sony has given updates saying that they are working as fast as they can to fix this problem, and are predicting this error to be solved by tomorrow morning. Has your PS3 caught the time traveling bug or are you still here with us in 2010? Leave a comment below. We will post any updates that come our way on this post.

Update (8:30 PM EST): People have been testing out their PS3’s and they are running fine. Not everyone’s PS3 has lost trophies and other game data, but if you did then here’s what you do to get it back: just launch the game that has lost trophies, and the game automatically links with your PSN account online and all your trophies should reappear. You also can go to Settings and Date and Time and set your PS3 to sync the date and time online.  Sony also has officially confirmed on their PlayStation Blog that PS3’s should now be good to go, and judging from the amount of people that are playing Uncharted 2 online, we’re gonna go ahead and say its once again safe to turn your PS3 on.

Sony Unveils New 250 GB PS3

The new PS3 with  250 GB hard drive

You honestly didn’t think Sony would just let the PS3 stay behind the Xbox 360 in hard drive space now did you?

A few days ago we wrote about how Microsoft is making a special edition Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 version of the Xbox 360 with a 250 GB hard drive. Now, Sony has upped the PS3 to that same 250 GB. This should be great news for those looking for a new PS3 and for those that use the PS3 as a media center as now you got a heck of a lot more room for your pix, music, videos and PlayStation Network game downloads.

Features and looks are otherwise are the same as the recently announced 120 GB PS3, and it will be available for $350 ($50 less than the CoD 360 bundle– though you don’t get CoD included here, and only $50 more than the 120 GB PS3), when it comes out next month on November 3rd.

PS3 Going 3D Next Year!

MLB The Show– IN 3D!!! (pic from CNET)

Natal who? If your a PS3 owner this has got to be awesome news that is sure to make your Labor Day weekend. Sony said today that come sometime next year, the PS3 will be receiving a ? software update: play games in 3D. While it the Sony’s demo used the PS3 Slim, presumably the 3D support would include all PS3 models (they have nearly identical specifications). Better yet, its said that all existing PS3 games will take full use of the PS3’s new 3D playing capabilities. AWESOME!

However, you will need a new 3D-capable TV to play the PS3 games in 3D, but don’t worry: this is all part of Sony’s new mission to bring 3D to the home– with new Bravia LCD TV’s, Vaio PC’s, Blu-ray players, and CyberShot digital cameras all said to be going 3D next year. Yeah, pretty awesome. You’ll also need to wear some 3D glasses, though their design is unknown for now.

Engadget has the full scoop with some video of the PS3 playing Wipeout HD in 3D on a software updated PS3 Slim. But wow, 3D PS3 or an Xbox 360 with Project Natal? The decision just got a whole lot tougher, but which one would you go with?

Xbox 360 Getting a Price Cut Too? (Update– It's Offical)

target xbox 360 price cut

Xbox 360’s Price Cut in Target flier (Pic from Engadget)

Well, well look what we have here. Another Xbox 360 price cut, this time to match the PS3 Slim’s new low price? If these upcoming weekend fliers for Best Buy and Target are to be believed, then don’t run out to buy that new PS3 Slim or Xbox 360 yet. Microsoft is about to drop the Xbox 360 Elite‘s price down to that same $299 the PS3 Slim is going for. Yup, $100 price drop, and definitely worthy of a week’s wait before buying in my opinion. Now what about the Xbox 360 Pro that’s right now priced at $299? Well, according to these fliers, that will be dropped to $249, but only while supplies last as rumors around the web are saying that Microsoft is about to drop the Pro from the lineup entirely (and leaked new boxes for the Elite and Arcade are only now showing the $200 Arcade version and the Elite on the back of the box, with no Pro in the middle– this helped fuel those rumors of Microsoft cutting the Pro).

Now Microsoft hasn’t confirmed any of this yet, but I sure believe this is real. Why? It only makes sense. Microsoft isn’t about to let the PS3 be the cheapest of the 120 GB consoles, especially with the holiday season starting in a couple of months. And the pix of the flyers also look real (seriously, these look like cellphone shots taken quickly). So what’ll it be– Xbox 360 Elite or PS3 Slim for your $299?

UPDATE: Yup, Microsoft came out today and officially said that starting tomorrow, they will cut the price of the Elite to $299, while the Pro is dropped to $249 while supplies last as they kill off remaining stock. Microsoft also reiterated that the Arcade will remain $199 and that all Xbox 360 consoles bought will work with the upcoming Project Natal. Full press release can be found here.
