On AT&T and waiting for the gaming beast of a phone also known as the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play? Well, in a little over a week your wait will be over. Starting September 18th the AT&T version of the Xperia Play, called the Xperia Play 4G (because it can access AT&T’s faster HSPA+ “4G” network), can be yours for a pretty great price of only $50 with new 2 year contract and data plan.
Like the Verizon Xperia Play released earlier this year, the AT&T Xperia Play 4G comes with some solid specs like a high-res 4 inch screen (so games and everything else you do on your phone looks nice, sharp and clear), 1 GHZ processor (for speed and so that all your games play well too), the latest Android 2.3 Gingerbread, 5 megapixel back camera with second front camera for video chat, and of course a bunch of pre-loaded PlayStation games so you can start playing the slide-out PlayStation keypad the second you get the phone. The pre-loaded games on here are also a bit different from the Verizon Xperia Play, with the AT&T version coming with: Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, Crash Bandicoot, Sims 3, Madden ’11, Dungeon Defenders: Second Wave, and Tower Bloxx (the last two weren’t pre-loaded on the Verizon version). You can also buy over 150 other PlayStation games from the PlayStation game store (including games like Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Minecraft Pocket Edition)
We found the Xperia Play to be a pretty solid phone when we reviewed the Verizon version a few months back (we found it to be one of the best Verizon phones for back to school) and we were equally impressed with the AT&T version we saw in July (they’re pretty much the exact same phone though AT&T’s comes in blue and has a dock and “music cable” included in the box). And at only $50 with a new 2 year contract and data plan this looks to be a solid deal for anyone looking for a great Android phone on AT&T— and a perfect choice for anyone looking for a great gaming phone.
We liked the Xperia Play (aka PlayStation phone) when we reviewed it earlier this month, but we really wished the price was a little lower. Well, Sony Ericsson and Verizon listened and now as part of Verizon’s back-to-school deals they’ve lowered the Xperia Play’s price to a much better $99.99 on new 2 year contract with data plan (down from the original $199.99).
The other specs on the Xperia Play are still the same, like that sharp 4 inch high-resolution touchscreen with slide-out PlayStation gamepad, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, fast 1 GHZ processor with 512 MB of RAM, 5 megapixel back camera with second front camera for video chat, and pre-loaded games of Madden NFL 11, Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior, Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, The Sims 3, Star Battalion, Crash Bandicoot and Tetris.
So if you’re looking for a great gaming phone to kill time between classes this school year, this now looks to be an even better choice for you.
The Xperia Play and its new price are available now from Verizon.
Gaming fans on AT&T this ones for you. The HTC Status wasn’t the only big new phone AT&T showed off at their Unwrapped event. Yes, the Xperia Play, aka PlayStation Phone, is coming to AT&T later this year. Not much will be different between the upcoming AT&T version and the one Verizon launched a few weeks back– features like the great 4 inch screen, 1 GHZ processor, Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS, 5 megapixel back camera with front camera for video chat, and of course the slide-out PlayStation gamepad are all still here.
Now that’s not to say that the AT&T version won’t be getting some unique features of its own like Sony Ericsson’s custom Timescape UI running on top of Android (think of this as Sony Ericsson’s version of HTC Sense or Samsung’s TouchWiz. We actually found this to be pretty nice and easy to use in our brief time with the phone), an option for a blue color in addition to the standard black, and the biggest new addition: support for AT&T’s 4G HSPA+ network. The pre-loaded games on here are also a bit different from the Verizon Xperia Play, with the AT&T version coming with: Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, Crash Bandicoot, Sims 3, Madden, Dungeon Defenders: 2nd Wave, and N.O.V.A 2 (the last two weren’t pre-loaded on the Verizon version).
We got to spend a few minutes with the AT&T Xperia Play and it’s pretty much the same as Verizon’s version we recently reviewed— and this is great news if you’re on AT&T and need a great gaming phone that doubles as a true PSP.
Unfortunately the AT&T and Sony Ericsson reps we spoke with wouldn’t give us an exact price or release date on when we can expect the Xperia Play to be available in your local AT&T store, but we’ll of course keep you posted on this once we learn more.
There have been a lot of great phones already this year but the release of the Xperia Play, aka PlayStation Phone, was probably one of the most anticipated. Finally, the mix of a PSP and a phone was here. We finally got to spend some real quality time with Sony Ericsson and Verizon’s long awaited Android/PSP mashup, and well, was it worth the wait?
We’ve got all the info you’re gonna want to know and more, so read on for our full Teen Review of the Xperia Play.
For all of you on Verizon waiting to get your hands on the Xperia Play (aka the PlayStation Phone) your lucky day is almost here. The final piece to this long, leaked puzzle is finally in place with Sony Ericsson and Verizon today finally confirming the release date and price for this gaming beast: next Thursday, May 26th, for the as expected $200 on 2 year contract and data plan.
Sony Ericsson also confirmed that each Xperia Play will be shipping with 7 full games pre-loaded on the phone— Madden NFL 11, Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior, Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, The Sims 3, Star Battalion, Crash Bandicoot, and Tetris– with an additional 50+ games available at launch via the V Cast App Store. And yes, it’s also a full Android 2.3 Gingerbread phone so you can also get any apps available in the regular Android Market. On top of all that you also get a high-res 4 inch screen, 1 GHZ processor with 512 MB of RAM (so your games will look and play great), and a 5 megapixel back camera (with flash and HD video recording) with a second front camera for video chat.
Pre-orders for the Xperia Play will begin on Verizon’s site starting this Thursday, May 19th, and for more details on the Xperia Play make sure to check out our first look from CTIA.
So Verizon users– you’ve got an upgrade coming up sometime over the next couple of months and while you like some of the phones already out there, you really wanna know what Verizon’s got planned during the next few weeks or months so you don’t go out and buy something only to really regret it a week later. We’re here to help. While not all of these are confirmed to be coming to Verizon (some are just our best guesses based on rumors we’ve been hearing), here are 5 phones that are said to be on their way to Verizon that if you have an upgrade should be really excited for.
Ever since it was first leaked last year the internet has been buzzing about the new Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, which some of you may know as the PlayStation Phone that will soon be out for Verizon. Wow MWC is off to a crazy start. Today, as promised, Sony Ericsson took the full wraps off the Xperia Play/PlayStation Phone, and wow is it looking better and better. Just as Wirefly leaked last week, Verizon will be the lucky carrier to get this awesome phone in “early Spring” (they just don’t give up at all do they? First it was 4 4G phones at CES, next the iPhone 4 and now this? And it’s only February!).
As for specs? Wirefly looked again to be 100% on the mark, with the official word being that this beast will come with:
- 4 inch high-resolution screen– This fits in with all the other rumors we’ve heard about the phone, and with a resolution of 854×480 expect games to look really awesome on here.
- Android 2.3 Gingerbread out of the box– Yes, this will be running the latest and greatest of Android for phones which is definitely something to get excited about because it’s the best version of Android for phones ever released (faster, updated Google Apps, support for game controllers *cough* *cough*)
- 1 GHZ processor with 512 MB of RAM– To make sure all those PlayStation games run smoothly.
- GPS and WiFi– With support for WiFi N networks and the ability to use the phone as a portable WiFi hotspot.
- 5 megapixel back camera with flash and HD video recording with second front camera for video chat– Just like the iPhone 4, Nexus S, Samsung Epic 4G etc.
- 8 GB microSD card included in the box
Oh, and the phone will also ship with one “legendary” PlayStation One game (title not yet announced), with an additional 50 games available at launch (including Guitar Hero, Assassin’s Creed, and Dead Space to name a few) from a whole bunch of publishers (with some current smartphone games already out there getting special extra levels on the Xperia Play).
Still no price and exact release date– but wow is this turning into some awesome year for anyone on Verizon. New video of the Xperia Play in action after the break.
File this under MAJOR RUMOR. One of the bigger cell phone stores on the web, Wirefly.com, has today published some very interesting details about the Xperia Play— which some of you may know as the PlayStation Phone. And if this is true (which we are inclined to really believe it might be considering that these guys are one of the top sellers of phones online and would therefore have access to this type of info), boy would it answer a whole bunch of questions about this highly anticipated phone. In a comparison post with the Verizon iPhone 4, Wirefly revealed a whole bunch of never before seen details on the Xperia Play including some truly impressive specs such as:
- 4 inch high-resolution screen— This fits in with all the other rumors we’ve heard about the phone, and with a resolution of 854×480 expect games to look really awesome on here.
- Android 2.3 Gingerbread out of the box— Yes, this will be running the latest and greatest of Android for phones which is definitely something to get excited about because it’s the best version of Android for phones ever released (faster, updated Google Apps, support for game controllers *cough* *cough*)
- 1 GHZ processor with 512 MB of RAM— To make sure all those PlayStation games run smoothly.
- GPS and WiFi— With support for WiFi N networks and the ability to use the phone as a portable WiFi hotspot.
- 5 megapixel back camera with flash and HD video recording with second front camera for video chat— Just like the iPhone 4, Nexus S, Samsung Epic 4G etc.
- 8 GB of built-in memory with support for more via microSD card slot
Yeah, if true then it’s pretty solid indeed. Of course, many details such as price, release date and if it will be 3G only or support Verizon’s new 4G LTE network all have yet be revealed, but that hopefully will come on Sunday when Sony holds their MWC press conference. As always, we’ll have it all broken down for you right here, but assuming the above is true and that this is coming to Verizon, what will it be: iPhone 4 or PlayStation Phone?
PlayStation Phone fans it’s finally almost here. Moments ago during Super Bowl XLV, Sony Ericsson (Sony’s phone division) let loose an all new ad touting none other than the PlayStation Phone itself, now called the Xperia Play. Not much was shown off in the ad specs wise– but the biggest needed thing we needed to see was, and that is official shots of this bad boy running PlayStation games in some awesome press shots of the phone itself (one of which you can see above, and it does look AWESOME!). Full info on this beast should be coming in about a week when Sony has their big Mobile World Congress keynote (also known as MWC– a big cell phone conference in Barcelona where a whole bunch of awesome new cell phones are announced for the coming year)– and you can bet we’ll have it all covered for you here once more info come out.
See the ad and another shot of the homescreen (which starts off really freakishly) again after the break.
